It is located between two river basins, the Sil and the Navia, separated by the ports of\u00a0<strong>Ancares Pass\u00a0<\/strong>(1670 m asl) to the north and\u00a0<strong>Port of Portelo\u00a0<\/strong>(1068 masl) to the south of the Ancares mountain range.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>The foothills of the Cantabrian mountain range known as the Sierra de Ancares is a geomorphological system where the provinces of Le\u00f3n and Lugo meet. It stretches from south to north, from Pe\u00f1a Rubia in the south-western end, and separates it from the valley of\u00a0<strong>Balboa\u00a0<\/strong>in Le\u00f3n, and of the\u00a0<strong>Noceda\u00a0<\/strong>in Lugo, to the Ancares pass, which borders the Mingat\u00f3n mountain range to the north and from where the Ancares valley opens up to the southeast, through which the river that has given its name to the whole region flows.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CNIG50_6-0\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-DiputacionLeon2003_1-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Ancares#cite_note-DiputacionLeon2003-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/><\/a><\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>The Ancares valley, the result of glacial and fluvial erosion, is surrounded by mountains of high average altitude (Pico Cui\u00f1a 1987 masl) and steep slopes and is located to the northwest of El Bierzo.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\"><\/sup>\u00a0The main river is the river Ancares, a tributary of the river C\u00faa in the Sil basin. It rises at the junction of the rivers Cui\u00f1a and de la Vega to the south of Cand\u00edn. Its tributaries are the rivers Miravalles and Seco, and the streams of Pened\u00f3n, Bali\u00f1as and de la Cruz. The valley closes at the southern end of the municipality of Cand\u00edn, coinciding with the southern limit of the traditional district <strong>Valle de Ancares<\/strong>. After this gorge, the valley opens out again in\u00a0<strong>San Mart\u00edn de Moreda<\/strong>\u00a0and then the river flows into the C\u00faa in the municipal district of<strong>\u00a0San Pedro de Olleros.<\/strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-enciclopediaLeon_2-2\"><\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>To the north of the Mingat\u00f3n mountain range, towards Asturias, the Ibias river valley opens up with the Borde, Pandelo and Valcarce mountain ranges, and the Muniellos mountain ranges, which separate it from the Narcea river, and <strong>Barreiro<\/strong> that separates it from the\u00a0<strong>Navia River<\/strong>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CNIG200AS_9-0\"><\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>To the south of the Barreiro mountain range extends the Navia basin with small mountain ranges such as those of Linares, Murias or Granda de Arrojo, until it reaches the district of <strong>Cebrero<\/strong> which forms the transition between Los Ancares and the Caurel mountain range.<sup id=\"cite_ref-CNIG200LU_10-0\"><\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>Continuing from the port of <strong>Piedrafita<\/strong> to the east is the valley of the\u00a0<strong>Valcarce<\/strong>\u00a0 tributary of the\u00a0<strong>Burbia\u00a0<\/strong>with the valleys of the Balboa on the left bank and\u00a0<strong>Barjas\u00a0<\/strong>to the right. To the north, the Burbia valley borders the Ancares valley, and further north opens up the\u00a0<strong>Valle de Fornela<\/strong>The traditional region of Le\u00f3n, headwaters of the river C\u00faa. To the west of this valley are the traditional districts of Rivas del Sil and Laciana, which form the \"Alto Sil\".<sup id=\"cite_ref-CNIG200LE_7-2\"><\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>The Leonese part of Los Ancares, in addition to the valley of the river Ancares, includes the valleys of\u00a0<strong>Fornela<\/strong>, Burbia and Tejeira. The area covers an area of just over 62 000 ha. The Galician part is articulated around the villages of <strong>San Rom\u00e1n de Cervantes<\/strong> and <strong>Navia de Suarna<\/strong> and covers an area of almost 8000 ha.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\"><\/sup>\u00a0It is drained by the tributary rivers on the right bank of the river Navia, whose sources are in the Ancares mountain range.
